Certification
In the upper secondary technical education, students take the vocational matura at the end of the programme. Students who pass the vocational matura receive a school leaving certificate (Spričevalo o poklicni maturi). The vocational matura and successful completion of the education programme are specified by the Matura Examination Act (sl) the ministerial rule the Vocational Matura Rules (sl). The issue of certification is specifying two ministerial rules: Rules on Upper Secondary Education School Documentatio (sl) and Rules on Forms of Public Documents in Secondary Education (sl).
The vocational matura is an examination of two parts, namely compulsory of written and oral exam in mother tongue and theoretical-technical subject and elective part of oral and written exam in foreign language or maths, and seminar thesis or product or service with oral presentation to demonstrate practical skills for a chosen occupation.
The outcomes of the vocational matura are assessed in points and percentage points. The points are then transformed into grades in line with the criteria of the National Vocational Matura Committee. The grading scale comprises: 1 (fail), 2 (pass), 3 (good), 4 (very good) and 5 (outstanding), whereby grade 1 is a fail grade and all other grades are pass grades. For subject exams taken at a higher level of difficulty, the grading scale is changed to point grades, namely from 1 to 8.
The vocational matura is administered by the National Vocational Matura Committee appointed by the minister. The implementation of the vocational matura at a school is administered by the school vocational matura committee with the head teacher presiding. Technical and professional support for the preparation of the examination materials is the responsibility of the National Examinations Centre.
To pass the vocational matura renders students the right to enrol in professional higher education programmes or short cycle higher vocational education programmes. Students may pursue their studies in certain university programmes, but they have to take and pass additional exam in one of the general matura subjects.
