Teachers’ remuneration and career prospects are an intrinsic part of policies aiming to attract the best candidates and ensure they remain in the profession. Are teachers in Europe well paid? What prospects for salary increases do they have as they progress in their career? Have teachers gained or lost purchasing power in recent years? The Eurydice country sheets answer these questions, covering pre-primary to general upper secondary education levels.

They show indeed the composition and differences in teachers’ earnings among the Eurydice Network countries. Detailed information on the allowances and other additional payments that teachers and school heads receive are included too.

Data have been collected jointly by the Eurydice and the OECD/NESLI networks.

For the first time, country sheets are published in an open data format and precede the publication of the report Teachers' and School heads' salaries and allowances, 2020/2021 which will be released in October 2022. As usual, our annual comparative overview will examine the statutory salaries for beginning teachers, and the prospects for salary increases throughout their career. It will also look into salary differences across education levels, usually linked to different qualification requirements.
