6.8Organisational Variations and Alternative Structures in Upper Secondary Education

Last update: 22 June 2022

Upper secondary education has more freedom than the primary and lower secondary levels to provide organizational variations and alternative structures, in adaption to the profile of the subject and within the frames of the National Curriculum.

Approved independent upper secondary schools may, among others, provide education programs on an international basis or provide upper secondary education in combination with top-level sports or another subject profile. See Independent School Act section 2-1.

In the school year 2019-2020, there were 4 international schools in upper secondary education. However, several schools use English as their main or only teaching language, without calling themselves international schools. See link to IB World School for Norway here.

Further, there are currently 17 registered top-level sports schools and three schools that are registered with other alternative profiles, respectively Science, Ecology and Music, Dance and Drama.

Pupils with special needs or pupils that are hospitalized or admitted to an institution for a longer period of time are facilitated in line with the prerequisites outlined with regard to single structure education. See Education Act Chapter 5 and section 3-1.
