Organisational aspects
For lecturers at higher education institutions, universities or service centres offer specific CPD and advisory services in the field of university teaching and sometimes in the field of management. CPD for lecturers at universities is mostly supported by calculating CPD as working time and/or through financial contributions. Participation is generally voluntary; however, in principle, it is essential for career progression.
The admission requirements for CPD courses in university teaching depend on each course. Some require teaching activity in the tertiary sector or in CPD or relevant experience.
CPD courses in the field of university teaching last, depending on the course, from a few days to several semesters, in which case a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) may also be obtained. The contents include planning and implementing lectures, student support and assessment, measuring and evaluating learning achievements, and assessing, documenting and reflecting on teaching.
The professional development of lecturers takes place in connection with their professional duties. The universities may grant research and education leave for fixed periods of time. These are for a maximum of six months.
