The Law on Higher Education and Research specifies that teachers in higher education have the right, within the limits of their competence, to participate in competitions for implementation of research programmes and obtaining of support from higher education and research funds and also utilise the appropriated resources; to participate in competitions for study visits in the Republic of Lithuania and abroad; to participate in various trade unions and associations, including those functioning abroad. Specific requirements for teachers’ continuing professional development and its procedure are established by every institution of higher education.

Incentives for participation in continuing professional development (CPD) activities

Once in every five years, higher education institution teachers are entitled to a sabbatical leave not exceeding one year to do research and develop their scientific and educational qualifications. During this period, the teacher is paid his/her average salary.
