Definition of the target group

In adult education and training, mechanisms are conceived and implemented for specific target groups: disabled individuals, or illiterate individuals.

Specific support measures

Mechanisms for illiterate individuals are explained in the chapter regarding adult education.

Two main measures exist for supporting disabled individuals into adult education.

Pre-orientation centre  

The pre-orientation centre supports disabled individuals who are facing difficulties when transitioning into the labour market. The centre evaluates with the individual a personalized orientation according to his/her medical condition.

The trainee benefits from a personalized tutoring with a trainer, who can propose exercises into professional workshops to evaluate the trainee’s abilities regarding the intended professional project.

The 12-week long traineeship is financed by the State. The trainee only has to pay for catering and transports.

At the end of the traineeship, the centre provides a professional and medical overview to the Maison départementale des personnes handicapées (MDPH – local authority of disabled individuals) and the trainee. According to results, the trainee is offered either a job into a normal company, a job into an adapted company, a job into a specific working institution for disabled individuals or another traineeship.

The contract or traineeship for professional retraining

Each person that became inapt to work because of a disability can be offered a contract or a traineeship of professional reeducation. The contract allows the disabled person to benefit from a support to readapt to the previous job and the traineeship to learn a new job. It concerns people who lost their ability to work following a sick leave, a workplace accident or a professional sickness.

The traineeship aims to return to work in an ordinary work environment along with the acquisition of new skills through a qualifying training. The duration of training lasts between 10 and 30 months. It allows adaptation to a new professional environment thanks to periods of adaptation in a vocational rehabilitation center. This qualifying training generally leads to a diploma approved by the State.

The purpose of the contract is to return to the exercise of the profession through practical and possibly theoretical training. The contract is concluded for a period of 3 months to 1 year. It can be implemented after resuming part-time work for a therapeutic purpose. A tripartite contract is concluded between the primary health insurance fund, the usual employer and the individual
