3.Funding in education

Last update: 17 June 2022

This chapter presents information on funding in school, higher and adult education.

School education

Public elementary and secondary education rely on public funding. Private schools may also receive public funding, which is calculated in different ways for schools which apply and those which do not apply national syllabi. International schools do not any receive State subsidies.

Higher education

Public funding is provided to the University of Luxembourg, which receives a State subsidy but may also use other kinds of funds, and to secondary schools which offer short-cycle programmes leading to an Advanced technician's diploma (BTS; brevet de technicien supérieur). Other offers rely on private or foreign financing. There is no grant-aided higher education sector in Luxembourg.

Adult education

There are different types of funding in adult education: while public institutions offering adult education mainly rely on State funding, non-profit organisations or municipalities may benefit from State grants. Some providers are funded by interest groups and economical sectors, and a part of the provisions is entirely commercial.
