9.9Continuing professional development for teachers and trainers working in adult education and training

Last update: 12 June 2022

Teachers and trainers at the Evening Schools and the State Institutes of Further Education have the same in-service training provisions as any other public school teacher.

The professional development of the evening teachers (as in all sections of primary and secondary education), will result through the new system of assessment of the educators which is provided in the Proposal of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Pedagogical Advisors will act as mentors and trainers for the teachers, providing support to them, and advising them on various educational topics. Senior instructors and Assistant Directors might be used as mentors in small-scale schools.

Special seminars are provided for teachers and trainers at the Adult Education Centres, in order to prepare them for their role as adult educators. They cover methodological approaches, group dynamics, how adults learn and other relevant subjects.

Trainers, in order to be approved to teach courses subsidized by Human Resource Development Authority, are required since December 2014 to be certified (as Trainers of Professional Training (Εκπαιδευτές Επαγγελματικής Κατάρτισης) EEK) through the system of Professional Qualifications (Σύστημα Επαγγελματικών Προσόντων), Evaluation and Certification of Training Providers (AxioPistoSyn). The majority of the instructors have followed a 24-hour course in order to become certified.

As with any section of higher education, there is no regulated continuing professional development for teaching staff at the Mediterranean Institute of Management.
