There are several primary school variations that differ from the most common public basic schools:

  • basic music school, lasts from 2 to 6 years, or 8 years for talented pupils; entrance examination is required; attendance is parallel to regular primary school (pupils go to both schools at the same time);
  • basic ballet school, lasts 4 years, or 8 years for talented pupils; entrance examination is required; attendance is parallel to regular primary school (pupils go to both schools at the same time);
  • basic school for adult education, lasts from 3 to 5 years;
  • special education schools, for pupils with severe learning difficulties;
  • private schools, similar to public primary schools or with specific educational orientation (e.g. Montessori, Decroly etc.);
  • foreign schools, founded by foreign country entities (pupils are usually children of foreigners and diplomats living in Serbia);
  • diaspora schools, for pupils living outside of Serbia;
  • separate departments, for pupils in rural areas;
  • minorities education - members of national minorities have the right to be educated in the language of the respective national minority;
  • accelerated education, for pupils with outstanding school achievements;
  • home-teaching, for ill children.
