2.8Statistics on educational institutions

This section provides the most recent available data on the number of educational institutions from pre-primary to post-secondary non-tertiary education level (ISCED levels 0-4). Statistics on numbers and characteristics of higher education institutions can be found in the European Tertiary Education Register. A general overview of the categories of institutions providing publicly-subsidised adult education and training can be found in the chapter on adult education. The notes below the tables provide methodological explanations necessary for a good interpretation of data.

Notes

1) ”Private independent” is no descriptive category of national school statistics; additionally, national school statistics don’t include the necessary information in order to identify private independent institutions among all private institutions. Data on private independent institutions are included in column Government dependent private.

2) A very small amount of schools offer both, four years of primary education and four years of lower secondary education. These schools are classified either as a primary or as a secondary school according to the majority of classes observed in each school.

3) The category “Other general schools” depicts only private schools.

4) The educational institutions are counted in accordance with the legal entity approach.

2) The Austrian School Organisation Act distinguishes between ten different types of special needs school.
