In Greece, there is no University Faculty or Department with the sole purpose of providing academic teaching staff with initial education.  However, the minimum requirements for the selection of professors of all ranks are:

• The acquisition of a PhD title 
• The relevance of the subject of candidates’ doctoral thesis or overall research and scientific work to the cognitive field of the position announced.

Holding a PhD is not a pre-requisite for teaching positions in cognitive fields of exceptional and unquestionable particularity where a doctoral thesis is neither possible nor common, according to the “law” of the relevant art or scientific field (de lege artis).   

In such cases, different criteria for the recognition of candidates are employed such as awards in national and international competitions, participation in international exhibitions or even international recognition of their artistic work.
