Persons wishing to work as teachers in adult education teaching compulsory subjects must hold qualifications related to the teaching profession such as:
- Teacher’s Training Certificate (discontinued since 1978)
- Master’s Degree
- Bachelor of Education (Hons.)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Education
- Bachelor of Arts
- Diploma in Adult Education
- National Diploma in Teaching Adults
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification
- Trinity Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL)
- Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA)
- Any other qualification deemed as acceptable, depending on the subject they wish to teach
Qualifications related to adult education, social sciences and/or youth studies are considered as an asset.
Persons wishing to teach non-academic subjects such as crafts and leisure subjects must be in possession of a recognised qualification in the subject they wish to teach and preferably in possession of a Permanent Teacher’s Warrant. The Malta National Reform Programme specifies the importance of lifelong learning and the education of adults, and for adult educators to be suitably qualified to teach their area of specialization.
Adult learning centres are managed by adult learning centre coordinators, whose main role is to assist in maintaining a high level of quality and standards of learning. They also carry out the role of mentors, performing a supporting role as well ensuring the quality of teaching and learning.
Qualifications and experience in adult education, youth studies and/or social sciences are considered as an asset during the selection process for adult learning centre coordinators. Prospective adult learning centre coordinators are expected to have a good knowledge of the EU’s Action Plan on Adult Learning , of Malta’s vision and strategy for Lifelong Learning as outlined in Malta National Lifelong Learning Strategy 2020 , and a clear educational vision in line with the Framework for the Education Strategy for Malta 2014-2024.
Besides good planning, organisational, problem-solving, communication, and animation skills, coordinators are required to have a positive aptitude, motivation and initiative towards adult learning and its successful implementation and development.
