Generally, the same initial education qualifications apply to teachers and lecturers in adult education as teachers and lecturers working in the ordinary education system.

Teachers working in general adult education, ISCED 1-3

• Teachers in Preparatory Adult Education (FVU): Teachers are required to have a pedagogical diploma degree (Act on FVU).
• Teachers in General Adult Education (AVU): Teachers are required to have a Bachelor of Education or the equivalent (AVU guidelines).
• Teachers in Higher Preparatory Examination (HF): Teachers are required to have a Master’s degree as well as the professional postgraduate teacher training (Act on general upper secondary education programmes).

Teachers working in vocational adult education, ISCED 3-5

• Teachers in Vocational Education and Training for Adults (EUV): Depending on the subject area, teachers in Vocational Education and Training for Adults (EUV) are required to have a degree in vocational education and training as well as two to five years of professional experience (Ministry of Children and Education).
• Teachers in Short Adult Vocational Training programmes (AMU): Teachers are required to have a degree at minimum vocational upper secondary level + minimum three years of relevant and up-to-date professional experience. Furthermore, pedagogical qualifications within the field of adult education equivalent to a diploma degree in pedagogy is required (Act on adult vocational training).

Lecturers working in professional adult education, ISCED 5-7

• Lecturers in Academy Profession programmes, which correspond to Academy Profession programmes within the ordinary education system: Lecturers are required to have a higher qualification level than Academy Profession level. The qualifications comprises of pedagogical, theoretical, professional and/or vocational qualifications (Act on Academy Profession Programmes).
• Lecturers in Diploma programmes, which correspond to Bachelor's programmes within the ordinary education system: Lecturers are required to have a higher qualification level than Diploma level. The qualifications comprises of pedagogical, theoretical, professional and/or vocational qualifications (Act on Diploma Degrees).
• Lecturers in Master programmes, which correspond to Master's programmes within the ordinary education system: There are no statutory regulations concerning the initial education for lecturers at Master’s level. However, a lecturer as a rule has a university degree. At universities, all new researchers and lecturers complete a professional postgraduate teacher training course (universitetspædagogikum). The universities hold the responsibility for the lecturers’ qualifications.
